The Rietvlei Nature Reserve is located in Pretoria and is about 4000 hectares in size.
Located within the reserve is the Rietvlei Dam. This reserve surrounds and includes the Rietvlei dam and is situated southeast of Pretoria between the R21 highway on the western side and the R50 road on the northeast.
This site belongs to the City of Tshwane and came into existence due to a water scheme to supply drinking water for the city of Pretoria. Rietvlei Nature Reserve is, therefore, a fairly large nature reserve in an urban setting and has survived as a conservation area since 1929.
Activities for the public to participate in at the reserve include hiking, game viewing, environmental education, birdwatching, and overnight trips. Facilities available include access to lapas and braai facilities, the Marais Dam, the Rietvlei Coffee Shop and a lecture hall.
