The relaxed Nineteen69 Pub and Bistro has all the fixings of an old-school diner. This buzzy bar in Randburg and Broederstroom (in Hartbeespoort) is the kind of place where you can let loose for lazy sundowners with cool and quirky interiors, an expansive indoor area that spills into the outdoors, and only good vibes.
It’s also the perfect sports bar in Johannesburg especially with vibey crowds on game day. But their signature is the classic car memorabilia while pouring beers on tap alongside easy pub-inspired plates. The venue is decked out in upcycled memorabilia knick-knacks, plants, and recycled timber, and also sports a bottle shop onsite that stocks rare spirits, low-intervention wines and craft beers sourced from across the world.
The menu keeps it simple yet varied through hearty pub favourites such as chilli poppers, nachos served in a skillet, grilled burgers, ribs and steak, and for a truly South African twist, savoury jaffles.
Friday evenings are reserved for throwback dance hits from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s complete with flowing cocktail jugs. And be sure to pop in on Sundays for live music with local bands and half-price cocktails.
Explore Mule Trail Hike and Block House Museum at Nineteen69 Pub and Bistro Broederstroom
Mule Trail is a breezy and scenic hike in Hartbeespoort. It’s easy enough for beginners and little ones to tackle the 6km route starting at the Blockhouse Museum, and proudly pet-friendly. Journey past the ruins of an original 120+ year intact Blockhouse as you head to the hilltop for incredible panoramic views.
This historical walking route that was built by the British Army in 1900 during the Anglo-Boer War. Mule Trail was originally constructed to carry supplies up to the soldiers stationed at the Blockhouse on the hilltop. After the British loss at the Battle of Kalkhuewel in June 1900 and the Boers retreated from the hilltop, the British realised that the three hilltops and ridge of Kalkhuewel were strategically important to protect as the Kalkhuewel Pass was the closest pass through the mountains connecting Johannesburg to Pretoria via a western route.
Cost: Entry fee is R50pp. Hikers who spend R200 or more at Nineteen69 Pub & Bistro at Broederstroom will have their entrance fee deducted from the bill
