Maboneng, meaning place of light, is a connected urban neighborhood in downtown Johannesburg that offers a unique and innovative experience, including restaurants, retail, theatre and art.
With over 20 independent eateries, each with a range of picturesque settings, from rooftop gardens to greened courtyards and sidewalk cafes, as well as a diversity of meal offerings, there is something to please everyone. Restaurants include Blackanese, which offers Japanese and African fusion food, Soul Souvlaki, serving traditional Greek and many others. The precinct also provides a quirky retail experience with street-side shops, owned by independent retailers, stocking a variety of local craft and design.
The Maboneng Precinct is also the artistic home to many of South Africa’s performers and artists, with venues such as The PopArt Theatre, The Bioscope and the various art galleries promoting local talent. The precinct also hosts music festivals as well as various shows, and has previously played host to Joburg Fringe as well as Art Week Joburg.
